Proprietary Blends Explained: What the Label Does and Does Not Tell You

A proprietary blend can disclose which ingredients are present while withholding the exact amount of each ingredient. That makes some comparisons harder.

Health note: Supplements can interact with medications and may not be appropriate for everyone. If you have a medical condition, take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or are considering a supplement for blood-sugar concerns, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

What is usually disclosed

The label may show the total weight of the blend and list its components, often in descending order by weight, while not giving a separate amount for every component.

Why this matters

If research on an ingredient used a defined dose, a proprietary blend can make it difficult to know whether the product contains a comparable amount.

Not automatically bad

A proprietary blend is not proof that a product is ineffective. It is simply less transparent for dose-level evaluation, so claims should be more conservative when amounts are unknown.
