How to Read a Supplement Facts Label

A Supplement Facts panel can answer questions that front-of-package marketing cannot. Here is what to look for before comparing formulas.

Health note: Supplements can interact with medications and may not be appropriate for everyone. If you have a medical condition, take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or are considering a supplement for blood-sugar concerns, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

Serving size first

Ingredient amounts are tied to a serving size. Two products may use the same ingredient but require different numbers of capsules or scoops.

Amount per serving

When a specific amount is listed, you can compare it with other products and with the amounts used in relevant research. When an ingredient appears only inside a proprietary blend, that comparison may be limited.

Other ingredients

Check excipients, capsule materials, sweeteners, allergens and other ingredients if you have dietary restrictions or sensitivities.

Warnings matter

Read age restrictions, pregnancy warnings, medication cautions and storage instructions. Marketing claims should never override the label's safety information.
